Race Your Own Line

rock - 3:32

Song Background/Inspiration

A flat-out flight anthem for the 2026 Air Race Classic, written for the all-women crews who fly the route across the country to the finish at Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Its heart is the thing that makes this race different: it is scored on a handicap, so you are not chasing the fastest plane, you are chasing your own best line. The verses lift off at dawn, the choruses open the throttle, and the bridge brings everyone home to a town waiting at the runway. It is about speed, but more about the spirit and freedom of getting there your own way.

Lyrics

The sun breaks gold on a field of wings We trade the ground for a sky washed clean Headphones crackle as the prop tips sing We chase the best line that we've ever seen It ain't the fastest plane that claims the day It's how you read the wind and hold your way Throttle to the morning, we were born to climb Chasing our own shadow, gaining on the time Wheels off the runway with nothing to lose This is the spirit and the freedom we choose From the high plains down to the river bends We carry the names that flew before Mothers and daughters, our lifelong friends Throttle wide open, we're chasing more It ain't the trophy waiting at the end It's every mile you fly beside a friend Throttle to the morning, we were born to climb Chasing our own shadow, gaining on the time Wheels off the runway with nothing to lose This is the spirit and the freedom we choose Mount Vernon's waiting where the route runs out The whole town gathers as the engines shout Wheels on the numbers, hear the home crowd roar We flew our own race and we're home once more Spirit and freedom, we answer the call Spirit and freedom, it's flying for all Spirit and freedom, we answer the call Spirit and freedom, one sky for us all Throttle to the morning, we were born to climb Chasing our own shadow, gaining on the time Wheels off the runway with nothing to lose This is the spirit and the freedom we choose Race your own line, race your own line Wheels off the runway, the whole sky's mine
